  1. On the red shield of the Budapest coat of arms, the castle with one tower represents Pest, one of the three cities next to the Danube River (Buda, Pest and Óbuda) that were united in 1873, when the coat of arms was created. The three towered castle represents Buda. The waving white stripe in the middle between the lion and the griffin represents the Danube river which separates Buda and Pest (and passes through the middle of the new, united city). The Crown of the King Saint Stephen lies on the top of the coat of arms. Pretty small stein but. Smaller than Rick Stein.

    • Doogie,
Thanks for the history lesson. I recall Budapest as being are you from “Buda” or are you from “Pest”. Much like the eternal Brisbane question of, are you from Bris (north of the river) or are you from Bane (south of the river)? Well, OK, I don’t want to mislead any non-Brisbane readers …there is no Bris or Bane (maybe there should be) but there certainly is a “north” and “south” of the river. I’m not sure if we have adopted any steins, Rick or otherwise.
