NOTES: Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea off the coast of Asia Minor, from which it is separated by the 1.6km Mycale Strait. In ancient times Samos was a particularly rich and powerful city-state, particularly known for its vineyards and wine production. Hence the grapes and olives depicted on the island, with the gril in traditonal dress and the Greek flag … in fact they have covered everything almost. Samos is now more known for it’s beaches and as a holiday destination. I have no idea what is written on the side.

NOTES: A small wall plate celebrating a small nation. Brunei formally Brunei Darussalam is a country located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. The Darussalam means ‘abode of peace’). And peace it has. With a population of about 460,000 and with large oil and natural gas reserves that have been the basis of its development and wealth since the late 20th century it is the richest country in Southeast Asia.

NOTES: Makarska, a small town on the Croatian coastline, about 60 km southeast of Split and 140 km northwest of Dubrovnik done in the very familiar carved wall plate style with a small metal insert featuring the Baroque cathedral of Saint Mark

NOTES: Lots of palm trees depicted as you would expect for Goa on India’s western coast. Needless to say Goa receives many sun loving international tourists.

MAKARSKA, CROATIA – Wall Plate

PLACE REPRESENTED: Makarska , Croatia

ITEM: Wall Plate

NOTES: Makarska, Croatia done in pyrography (wood decorated with burn marks) on a carved plate. Being on the coast a boat features and I’ve seen the same boat feature on other pyrography souvenirs though attributed to different places. Each boat may be the same but being hand applied pyrography means each is entirely individual (with minor differences).

NOTES: Greek plaster fridge magnet made to look a little like the white vernacular stone found all over the Greek islands including Crete and depicting the Minoan “Prince of Lilies” Fresco from Knossos.

COSTA RICA – Wall Ornament

ITEM: Wall Ornament

NOTES: Some effort has gone into this. A large vivid wall ornament from Costa Rica in Central America depicting large vivid animals from Costa Rica – the Red-Eyed Tree Frog, the Blue Morpho butterfly, one of the local monkey species (perhaps the Central American Squirrel Monkey or the Spider Monkey), and the birds, the Scarlett Macaw and the Keel-billed Toucan. This hand painted ornament is errr large and vivid, and, ultimately, striking.

ZAGREB, CROATIA – Wall Plate

PLACE REPRESENTED: Zagreb , Croatia

ITEM: Wall Plate

NOTES: Zagreb, the capital of Croatia done in the familiar pyrography (wood decorated with burn marks) style common to wooden wall plates in the region. The view of Zagreb cathedral (Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and the Tower of St. Mary church is taken from lookout in front of the Lotrščak fort in the Upper town. I assume the outside of the plates are standardised to a number of designs and the pyrography scenic view is applied to the plate middle. I don’t know if there is one artist or (more likely) a group copying a scene to multiple plates but I have seen the same scene on other plates (like this one). They are the same scene but they are, also, entirely individual with small differences.
