ITEM: Wall Ornament

NOTES: A traditional looking wall plate with some of the sites of Munich (Munchen in German). Though it is not as olde worlde traditional as it seems at fist glance.. Next to the New Town Hall (circa 1874), and and the twin towers of the Roman Catholic Frauenkirche (circa 1524) is the Olympiaturm (circa 1968).

The coat of arms of Munich depicts a monk dressed in a habit holding a book. Not surprising as the German name for Munich, München, means “of Monks”.

What happens in Munchen if you get the munchies? (okay, that was lame)

HOHENSCHWANGAU, GERMANY – Bottle

PLACE REPRESENTED: Hohenschwangau (specifically Neuschwanstein Castle) , Germany

ITEM: Bottle

NOTES: The famous Neuschwanstein Castle on a hill above the village of Hohenschwangau in southwest Bavaria, Germany depicted in nice colour on this miniature pinch bottle. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II, the King of Bavaria. Construction started 1869 and was completed the year of Ludwig’s death 1886 (he spent only eleven nights in the castle). As one who has gone through renovations over a lengthy period my advice is to borrow all the money at once and do it in one hit rather than over a long length of time. Apparently, “more than 1.3 million people visit annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer”

NOTES: Rüdesheim am Rhein is a German winemaking town in the west of the country. Drosselgasse is a lane in the heart of Rüdesheim’s Old Town (built in the 15th century). KOBLENZ, GERMANY – Shot Glass

ITEM: Shot Glass

NOTES: Deutsches Eck (“German Corner” is the name of a headland) on Koblenz where the Moselle river joins the Rhine river. The statue is of Emperor William I (one of many in Germany erected in his honour). The statue was destroyed by the Allies in 1945 and was eventually replaced in 1993. FRANKFURT, GERMANY – Wall Ornament

NOTES: A magnificently detailed look at Frankfurt, a Frankfurt that doesn’t exist anymore. The skyline is modern now. Here, the late 1950s or early 1960s, Frankfurt was still being rebuilt after heavy bombing during World War 2. The bridge (not sure which one) still has a steel span between the block foundations. Wonderfully evocative of a time gone by … and the Frankfurt Elvis would have seen when he was in the US Army stationed near by.

NOTES: Oooh, I love this. Rustic charm, a hidden compartment, and music. Konstanz is located at the western end of Lake Constance in the south-west corner of Germany, bordering Switzerland (which may explain the music box as most music boxes were made in Switzerland).  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konstanz

LORELEY, GERMANY – Cup

ITEM: Coffee Cup

NOTES: The Loreley is a rock on the Rhine near St. Goarshausen, Germany. It rises to about 120 metres above the waterline and is the most famous feature of the Rhine Gorge. According to wikipedia, “A very strong current and rocks below the waterline have caused many boat accidents there”.
