DARWIN, NORTHERN TERRITORY, AUSTRALIA – Tray

PLACE REPRESENTED: Darwin, Northern Territory , Australia

ITEM: Tray

NOTES: A tray showing the various sites of Australia’s wild north capital, Darwin. This is from the late 1960s or early 1970s and not much has changed since. Just kidding. In any event I leave it to Darwinians to tell me if this was before or after the devastating Cyclone Tracy which decimated Darwin in December 1974.

YEAR (APPROXIMATE): 1960s

MADE FROM: steel

MADE IN: unknown

MANUFACTURER: unknown

DIMENSIONS: 28cm diameter

ULURU, NORTHERN TERRITORY, AUSTRALIA – Wall Ornament

uluru - wall hanging (1)PLACE REPRESENTED: Uluru, Northern Territory , Australia

ITEM: Wall Ornament

NOTES: The famous Uluru … though probably still called Ayres Rock at the time of this travel trinket (as it was until 1993). Usually referred to as the largest rock in the world, it’s not. Mount Augustus in outback Western Australia is. Still this is pretty and, unusually, it is a night time or dusk scene of the rock as opposed to the more common daylight one.

YEAR (APPROXIMATE): 1970s

MADE FROM: wood

MADE IN:   Australia probably

MANUFACTURER: unknown

DIMENSIONS: 28cm long x 11cm wide x 1.5cm thick.     .

KINGS CANYON, NORTHERN TERRITORY, AUSTRALIA – Cup

ITEM: Steel cup

NOTES: A steel cup. Kings Canyon (which is part of the Watarrka National Park in remote Northern Territory, Australia, about 323 km south-west of Alice Springs).

Everything suggests this souvenir had a functional use around a camp fire.

YEAR (APPROXIMATE): 1980s

MADE FROM: steel

MADE IN:  China   (we probably sold them the iron ore to make this cup)

MANUFACTURER: Shanghai Bon Voyage International Trading Co

DIMENSIONS: 8.5cm diameter x 8cm high

KINGS CANYON, NORTHERN TERRITORY, AUSTRALIA – Salt & Pepper Shakers

Kings Canyon - SP Shakers (1)PLACE REPRESENTED: Kings Canyon, Central Australia , Australia

ITEM: Salt & Pepper Shakers

NOTES: Kings Canyon is part of the Watarrka National Park in Northern Territory, Australia, about 323 km southwest of Alice Springs. The plant depicted, the Sturt Desert Pea, is one of Australia’s best known wildflowers and is native to the arid regions of central and north-western Australia.

I’m not sure what plant is more prevalent at King’s Canyon but I do note that Sturt’s Desert Pea is the State floral emblem for South Australia not the Northern Territory. The Northern Territory has Sturt’s Desert Rose as it’s emblem.

How’s that for trivia?

YEAR (APPROXIMATE): 1970s

MADE FROM: ceramic material

MADE IN:  Australia

MANUFACTURER: Crow’s Souvenirs

DIMENSIONS: 9cm tall

Kings Canyon - SP Shakers (2)

NHULUNBUY, AUSTRALIA – Thermometer

PLACE REPRESENTED: Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory , Australia

ITEM: Thermometer

NOTES: Shells and thermometers. It doesn’t matter where you are, though on the water would be preferable, shells and thermometers always go together. Where do these shells come from? Not Nhulunbuy, surely. Maybe, it’s on the coast. Nhulunbuy is the name of the township on the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory. This is remote!

YEAR (APPROXIMATE): 1970s

MADE FROM: shells

MADE IN: unknown

MANUFACTURER: unknown

DIMENSIONS: 10cm high
