PLACE REPRESENTED: Caloundra, Queensland , Australia
ITEM: Humorous Ornament
NOTES: Old school Australian humour. The wheel rotates to display many humorous quotes on “The Sport of Kings”, which is not horseracing but rather betting on horseracing. Have you ever noticed that, inevitably, everything humorous about horse racing seems to revolve about bad luck with the horses? And yet we still gamble. Clearly the “Caloundra” is an afterthought to this tourist trinket. There wasn’t, even, a race track at Caloundra (well not till after this trinket, in the mid 80s). Still, it’s a nice bit of 1960s kitsch.

PLACE REPRESENTED: Bourke, New South Wales , Australia
ITEM: Ashtray
NOTES: Bourke is located on the Darling River 789 km north-west of Sydney, in New South Wales. Depicted is the famous North Bourke Bridge across the Darling which was completed in 1883. This bridge was designed to allow paddle-steamers to pass along the river. The bridge is a “lift up” or moveable-span bridge and is the oldest in Australia and is the sole survivor of its type in New South Wales. It served as a Gateway structure for 114 years before being bypassed in 1997. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bourke,_New_South_Wales https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/portal/heritage/north-bourke-bridge-darling-river-1883

TASMANIA, AUSTRALIA – Tea Towel
PLACE REPRESENTED: Tasmania , Australia
ITEM: Tea Towel
NOTES: A humorous tea towel depicting Tasmania and the "large desolate land off" its northern coast (Australia). All the negatives of the "large desolate land" are mentioned as well as all the postives in Tasmania. I can't speak to all the positives because a lot are value statements but the negatives are accurate. This map is made all that much more humourus by the fact that Australia, often, when depicted, leaves off the the large island state.
