ITEM: Small Dish NOTES: A small nic nac dish celebrating Tasmania’s Batman bridge which crosses the Tamar River. NOTES: A nice sturdy cheese knife whose only indication as being a travel souvenir is the gold lettering on the faux bone handle, “Greetings from Katoomba”. Surely, repeated use would cause this to fade? Well maybe it will, but this, from its styling, seems to be from the 1960s, and it’s still going strong. NOTES: A small dish depicting Marine Parade at Coolangatta, on the Gold Coast. It certainly doesn’t look like this any more, though it did up until the 1970s. A pity. The size of the row of pine trees along the left indicate this is from the 1930s.

The product is “Made in China” though “under Australian licence and supervision” whatever that means

NOTES: The Eureka flag depicting the Southern Cross constellation. Hoisted first in Victoria in 1854 as the war flag of the Eureka Rebellion against English tyranny it is the unofficial symbol of the Australian Republican movement. It has over the years become the symbol for Australian rebellion generally and has been used by the political left extensively. Unions like the Builders Labourer Federation, parties like The Australian Communist Party, The Australian Labour Party and the Labour movement generally have all waved the flag officially or unofficially. Oddly, the same flag has more recently been used by racist groups, the far right and the Australian neo-Nazis as well as bikers and bogans (a common unsophisticated person), the latter two by way of tattoos.

NOTES: A small nic nac dish displaying the Albury War Memorial built in 1925 to commemorate those who had died in World War 1. Albury is a regional city in southern New South Wales near the Victorian border (it is separated from its twin city in Victoria, Wodonga, by the Murray River). NOTES: A cute, delightfully retro kitsch dinner bell. Made in Japan (it’s printed clearly on the inside) for the Australian market (what’s more Australian than a koala, or err a kangaroo?) all you had to do was insert a locality name and put it on shelf for sale. At least, the craftsmanship allowed for the place name to be written on in paint. By the 70s this would be plastic and a sticker would be used. The population of Boreen Point is 264 today, who knows how many people lived there in the 1960s, but I suspect the koalas outnumbered them.
