NOTES: A wonderfully wall ornament made of resin and shell celebrating the subtropical joys of Hayman Island off the Queensland coast.

“Hayman Island is the most northerly of the Whitsunday Islands, part of the Cumberland Islands, which are located off the coast of Central Queensland, Australia … Hayman is a private island open to the public, most famous for its luxury resort which was built in the 1950s by millionaire Reg Ansett, who also founded the airline, Ansett Australia. MONTENARS, ITALY – Wall Ornament

Montenars - Wall ornament (3)PLACE REPRESENTED: Montenars , Italy

ITEM: Wall Ornament

NOTES: A magnificent souvenir celebrating the town of Montenars in Italy’s northern Alpine region (in the Province of Udine in the Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia). The souvenir depicts a climbing pick and rope (naturally enough for the area) with a excellent inlay containing a picture of the town, assorted flora and a miniature traditional Alpino hat common to the area. Wonderfully evocative and from a time when souvenirs had a little thought.

ITEM: Wall Ornament

NOTES: This would be nice if it was brass and solid wood but it’s plastic and cheap wood. Sydney deserves better though Oscar Levant’s quote about Hollywood may apply to it … “Strip away the phony tinsel of Hollywood and you’ll find the real tinsel underneath”.

ST IVES, ENGLAND – Display Plate

ITEM: Display Plate

NOTES: St Ives is a seaside town, in Cornwall, in the far south west tail of England. The small plate depicts a “Lucky Pisky”, a “pisky” being a fairy. He says “I’m from dear ol Cornwall for’ee m’dear”. I assume the pisky is saying he’s from Cornwall forever. I’m not sure if that’s lucky or not but he seems to be happy with the statement.

NOTES: I don’t know if the three master is a traditional Philippine boat (and the Philippino’s will need more than this to block Chinese expansionism) but the colours of their flag are all here: red, white, blue and gold.

ITEM: Plate

NOTES: A nice plate showing one of the stone lions guarding the entrance to the belfry and the adjoining Cathedral of Saint Domnius in Split’s beautiful old town.

The plate  has an artist mentioned which looks to be “R. Joanovic” and “75”.  This is a cut above your average tourist souvenir and appears to be made by the Stonehenge Pottery in England.

ITEM: Wall Hanging

NOTES: A beautifully detailed and painted wall tile depicting a traditional scene in a Greek village. Though it could be from any number of countries in the eastern Mediterranean. Is it idealised? It matters not, it is very stylish.

ITEM: Wall Ornament

NOTES: Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada celebrated in wood craft (that looks to be pyrography – the art of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic point … or it could be drawn).
