FITZROY FALLS, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA – Nic Nac Dish

Fitzroy Falls - Spoon Rest (1)PLACE REPRESENTED: Fitzroy Falls & Cascades, New South Wales , Australia

ITEM: Nic Nac Dish (dish)

NOTES: Fitzroy Falls & Cascades is near the head of the Yarrunga Creek in the Morton National Park located in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales (approx 170 kilometres south south-west of Sydney). Fitzroy Falls is not famous for fish or fishing so I’m not sure why this is in the shape of a fish. Well, apart from the manufacturer in Germany saying “vee have 10000 fish dishes da finkelstein Norvegins dont vant to buy from us. Ring da dummkopfs in New South Wales and ask if they vood like to put their vater fall on za dish”. Yes, I know that was lame and also a poor reinforcement of ethnic stereotypes, but … it’s late.

CAIRNS, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA – Side Plate

Cairns - Stoney Creek Bridge - small plate (1)PLACE REPRESENTED: Cairns (specifically Stony (or Stoney) Creek Bridge and Falls), Queensland , Australia

ITEM: Side plate

NOTES: Stony Creek Falls (10-15 minutes from Cairns City Centre) is a cascade waterfall on the Stony Creek. This small creek amongst the suburban rainforest provides a quick and easy natural swimming pool … or so the tourist brochures of the time suggest. The falls are best known for the curved lattice railway bridge that passes in front of them.

SALISBURY, ENGLAND – Ornamental Miniature

Salisbury - Minature four flute vase (1)PLACE REPRESENTED: Salisbury , England

Salisbury was called “New Sarum” at one stage, hence the Latin on the coat of arms.

What would I do without wikipedia?

What would I do without google?

TWEED HEADS, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA – Ornamental Miniature

Razorback - Tweed Heads - Ceramic something (1) Razorback - Tweed Heads - Ceramic something (3)

PLACE REPRESENTED: Tweed Heads (specifically Razorback Hill), New South Wales , Australia

ITEM: I’m not really sure what this is. I’m assuming it’s a tea bag strainer. (postnote: actually it’s just miniature souvenir ware of a shaving mug – see comments below)

NOTES: Razorback Hill is a  long, narrow hill located at the end of Razorback Road between Tweed Heads (in New South Wales) and Coolangatta (in Queensland) which offered a beautiful outlook of rolling hills, the sea to the east, and mountains to the west. At the summit on the western side there was a restaurant called the Chalet.  The Swiss owner, Karl Hiendlemayer, began to build his dream in 1916 and added to it over the years until it became a major tourist curiosity. He sold it to the Sutherland family in 1939 and, during the war years, it proved to be amongst the most popular venues for the relaxing and free-spending American servicemen. (see – you can learn things on the internet). Apparently the chalet on Razorback Hill (given the amount of artefacts with “Interior of The Chalet,” label on them) was quite the place to be and, apparently, had a stunning view.

It’s all gone now and has been built up and built out.

MANUFACTURER: ‘Victoria’ Schmidt & Company (I believe this “Victoria” stamp was used from approximately 1919-45)
