CALOUNDRA, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA – Nic Nac Bowl

Dicky Beach, Caloundra - Nic Nac Bowl (1)PLACE REPRESENTED: Caloundra (specifically Dicky Beach), Queensland , Australia

ITEM: Small Nic Nac Bowl

NOTES: Subtle, with a serene Dicky Beach depicted. Dicky Beach is both a beach and suburb of the Sunshine Coast Region, Queensland, Australia, located within the Caloundra urban centre. Despite the name the beach is not a nudist or naturists beach. The area was named after the iron steamboat, the SS Dicky, which ran aground during heavy seas on 12 February 1893 just in case you were wondering. The beach looks much the same …everything behind the beach doesn’t.

COLOMBIA – Wall Ornament

Colombia - Wall Ornament - tin (1)PLACE REPRESENTED: Colombia

ITEM: Wall Ornament

NOTES: A great vivid piece of aluminium tin foil raised art mounted on to a piece of thin Masonite wood. This art is a cut above your mass produced stuff. The detail on the raised foil is quite good and the colours are vivid. “Caminos de Colombia” means roads of Colombia … not sure why they have that as it is not a map.

Not likely to me mistaken as headphones either.

YEAR (APPROXIMATE): 1990s

MADE FROM: tin foil, wood.

MADE IN: Colombia probably.

MANUFACTURER: unknown

DIMENSIONS: 26cm  x 26cm

SAMOA – Fridge Magnet

MYKONOS, GREECE – Candle Holder

Mykonos - Greece - candle holder (1)PLACE REPRESENTED: Mykonos , Greece

ITEM: Candle Holder

NOTES: A really nice tea tree candle holder with coloured and painted glass. Quite evocative for a recent travel trinket. Mykonos is a Greek island in the Aegean and has, the typically, white houses and the famous Mykonos windmills as depicted on the glass. Mykonos’ nickname is “The island of the winds” which explains the windmills, and possibly why the candle needs to be encased in a lantern!

Much more subtle than the Australian comedy “The Kings of Mykonos” (2010).

YEAR (APPROXIMATE): 2000s

MADE FROM: steel , glass

MADE IN:  unknown

MANUFACTURER: unknown

DIMENSIONS: 20.5cm high x 7.5cm wide at base

MONTENARS, ITALY – Wall Ornament

Montenars - Wall ornament (3)PLACE REPRESENTED: Montenars , Italy

ITEM: Wall Ornament

NOTES: A magnificent souvenir celebrating the town of Montenars in Italy’s northern Alpine region (in the Province of Udine in the Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia). The souvenir depicts a climbing pick and rope (naturally enough for the area) with a excellent inlay containing a picture of the town, assorted flora and a miniature traditional Alpino hat common to the area. Wonderfully evocative and from a time when souvenirs had a little thought.

YEAR (APPROXIMATE): 1960s

MADE FROM: wood , steel , cloth

MADE IN:   Italy probably
