LORELEY, GERMANY – Cup

Loreley - Mug (1)PLACE REPRESENTED: Loreley , Germany

According to wikipedia, “A very strong current and rocks below the waterline have caused many boat accidents there”. So let’s celebrate the place with a coffee cup depciting mountain, river and boat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorelei

HOLLAND – Ornament

Holland - Clog Sailing Ship - wood (1)PLACE REPRESENTED:   Holland

ITEM: Ornamental Minature

Paint some windmills on the clog, err hull, throw in some flags and you have a perfect Dutch tourist trinket.

CROATIA – Ornament

Croatia - Wood Falcon - 70s (1)PLACE REPRESENTED:   Croatia

ITEM: Ornament

NOTES: I assume this is a sokol (falcon) which is the national bird of Croatia … or, if it isn’t, it should be. There are buildings, songs, poems, foods, folkloric groups and all sorts of other things named after it.

And, though not identified as croatian as such this was bought there, somewhere around Lovran or Rijeka I recall.

CROATIA – Ornament

Croatia - Wood Well - Small (1)PLACE REPRESENTED:   Croatia

ITEM: Ornamental minature.

NOTES: A minature traditional well, or bunar, in wood. Traditional working wells are still found all over Croatia. Every little rural house has one. This one is elaborate with a canopy and a bucket that goes up and down.

Okay, there is no place name depicted anywhere but it was bought there, around Lovran, I think.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, USA – Tray

New York City USA - Drinks Tray (1)PLACE REPRESENTED: New York City , New York, USA

ITEM: Drinks Tray

NOTES: A bamboo drinks tray depicting famous structures of New York City. Bamboo isn’t native to NYC as far as I know but the stencils of the structures can’t be mistaken for any other place in the world. The Twin Towers take pride of place in this pre-2001 souvenir.

YEAR (APPROXIMATE): 1970s

PORTUGAL – Bread Holder

Portugal - Bread Holder (1)PLACE REPRESENTED:   Portugal

ITEM: Bread Holder

NOTES: This is a bread roll holder beautifully decorated and featuring the rooster of Barcelos which is the black rooster depicted and is a national symbol of Portugal. Okay, it’s not hand embroided but rather printed but it is still quite stylish and would be a nice centrpiece to a Portugese themed dinner party!

It’s also a smart piece of useful kitchenware.

YEAR (APPROXIMATE): 1970s

AIRLIE BEACH, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA – Ornament

Airlie Beach - Minature Asian Boat (1)PLACE REPRESENTED: Airlie Beach, Queensland , Australia

ITEM: Wooden Ornament

NOTES: A small wooden (bamboo naturally) ornamental boat which is, Vietnamese or South East Asian in appearance despite “Airlie Beach” being printed on the paddle. Aaaahhhh, overstock.

Perhaps it was a comment on the waves (sic) of boat people who came to Australia from Vietnam in the late 1970s. It is simple but wonderfully detailed.
